Jackie Robinson was an American baseball player and civil rights pioneer who is remembered for breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball (MLB) when he became the first African American to play in the modern era studentsgroom. His courage and skill on the field earned him a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame and he continues to be an inspirational figure to this day. Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919 and moved to California with his family as a young boy. He attended UCLA, becoming the first athlete in school history to letter in four sports famousbiography. He left school after two years to serve in the Army during World War II and was later discharged for reasons of conscience. After the war howitstart, he signed a contract to play baseball in the Negro Leagues, and in 1945 was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first African American in MLB since the  theviralnewj 1880s. Robinson was subjected to intense public scrutiny and racial abuse throughout his career, and he endured it with quiet dignity forbesexpress. He was a leader both on and off the field, setting a strong example for other African Americans who followed him into the league.
